Religion is a gift
OK, now that I have your attention, let me explain the title.
I have always been fascinated by mythology. My mom read Roman mythology to me when I was a small child, and as soon as I stopped having horrible nightmares about Prometheus falling to his death, get revived, and then being eaten every day by an eagle, I started finding and reading every collection of legends and myths I could find. Note that I learned how to read when I was 8 years old and I heard the story of Prometheus for the first time when I was 5 years old.
I started dreaming about being a professional writer when I was 9 or 10 years old*, and at that time I didn't think about these stories as inspiration. They were just interesting stories. Now that I'm 32 years old, I find that the stories from the Bible, Roman and Greek mythology, Celtic hero stories, Norse mythology, Hinduism, Shintoism etc to be awesome fodder for creativity. Just look at TV shows like Sleepy Hollow, Charmed, or Supernatural, books like the Vampire Chronicles, the Harry Potter series, American Gods, and the Dark-Hunter series, movies like the Avengers, Life of Brian, and Bruce Almighty and you'll see how these stories have shaped and aided the writers' creativity.
Thank you, religion, for giving these people fodder for their stories, and an easy backdrop for fantastic worlds.
;P
*I now work as a professional translator in the Swedish-English language pair. Not too far off my original dream, eh?
